PFA Pushes Franchising as an Export Winner PDF Print E-mail

DTIusec pcm2014

The Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) has long believed that franchising can be a major contributor to the country’s exporting sector. Guided with this belief the Association has been marketing Philippine franchise brands through a number of programs and activities. These include the promotion of the Philippines as the Franchise Gateway to Asia and the participation in strategic international franchise shows among others. With over 20 franchise brands going international, the Philippines continue to lead in the ASEAN region in terms of number of exported franchise brands. The Association is concerned, however, that our leadership will soon be eclipsed by our neighbors because of their respective government’s generous support in terms of national development and international expansion. With this in mind, PFA made a courtesy call with Undersecretary Ponciano Manalo, Jr., who heads the Trade and Investment Promotions Group (TIPG) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in the hope of strengthening the partnership between PFA and DTI particularly in the area of promoting Philippine franchise brands overseas. The PFA delegation was joined by members of the PFA Board of Trustees and PFA members with overseas operations. Undersecretary Manalo expressed his office’s willingness to extend support in any way it can as he invited PFA to work with the Department in helping regional micro businesses to level up and become globally competitive. Photo shows (left to right) Ms. Althea Antonio, Trade Officer, DTI; Ms. Lin Deres, Franchise Relations Manager, Goldilocks; Atty Leo Dominguez, Director- Legal, Governance and Ethical Standards, PFA; Ms. Sherill Quintana, President, Oryspa; Ms. Bing S Limjoco, Vice Chairman, PFA Board; Undersecretary Ponciano Manalo; Mr. Samie Lim, Chairman Emeritus, PFA; Mr. Franklin Go, President, PFA (Goldilocks); Ms. Cristina Montinola, Franchise and Export Manager, Bench; Ms. Chit Estrada, Executive Director, PFA; Mr. Christopher Magnaye, Vice President for Merchandising, Logistics and Business Development, Folded & Hung.

PFA Undertakes Business Mission to Lao PDR to Expand Horizon for Philippine Franchising in ASEAN

Lao

As part of enhanced efforts to bring Philippine franchise brands to new markets, the Philippine Franchise Association (PFA) recently sent a business mission to Vientiane, Lao PDR, to explore expansion opportunities in the said country. Lao PDR is one of the four newer member states of ASEAN also known as CLMV (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam). While its main growth drivers are hydropower, mining and agro-forestry, there is also high potential for Philippine franchises in the said country because of the population’s growing prosperity and its increasing tourist arrivals, which has been growing at a rate of about 20% annually since 2008. In 2012 there were a total of 3.3 million visitors to Lao PDR.

The business mission also signalled PFA’s commitment to prepare members of the impending ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) not only in terms of preparing PFA members of the influx of other ASEAN franchises but also to help PFA members expand to other ASEAN countries – even in the non-traditional destinations for expansion.

The said business delegation, headed by Dr. Alan Escalona, Director for External Relations and Advocacy of PFA, engaged in market scanning and meetings with business groups including a lunch meeting hosted by Ambassador Ma Lumen B. Isleta at Don Chan Palace Hotel for the visiting Philippine delegation and key officers of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI).

The Association also participated in the Made in Laos Exhibit held at the Lao International Trade and Convention Center, where PFA promoted Philippine franchise brands going international. It should be noted the PFA was the only non-Laotian exhibitor in the said event.

This module will tackle why category leaders are leaders and how challengers can leapfrog their market standing versus those ahead of them.

Go will present in Modules 2-4 interesting topics on “Mansmith’s Franchise Diamond Model: Understanding How Franchising Really Works”; “The Moment of Truth of Franchisors and Franchisees: 4 Indispensable Truths To Know Category Barriers”; and “Planning for Franchise Excellence”.

In preparation for the Bootcamp, PFA and Mansmith conducted an extensive research using the Franchise Diamond Framework with the cooperation of some of the top franchise brands in the country like 7-11, Goldilocks, Jollibee, Mister Donut, Pancake House and The Generics Pharmacy.
